These paintings are slow and contemplative in their making. They are created using egg tempera, a process in which the paint is made from scratch each day. Colour is then built gradually, layer upon layer, embedding duration and repetition into the materiality of the work.
The colour palettes are derived from photographic sources, which function as points of departure rather than representational templates. These source images may depict everyday scenes or specific sites of interest, raising questions about how colour can distil and preserve a moment, while also allowing it to shift over time. The paintings develop without a preconceived endpoint; their compositions fold inward, with areas of the surface always exposed. They do not describe illusory space, but instead function as accumulations of moments and decisions on paper.

Céide Fields Series 2023
I began these paintings during my residency at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Co. Mayo in the summer of 2023. The colour palette is derived directly from the landscape in and around Ballycastle and the Céide Fields.
